Chronicle of Higher Education Article

October 18th, 2007 by blevine

By JJ HERMES

Several higher-education leaders testified before Congress on Wednesday on the continuing underrepresentation of women in tenured faculty positions in science and engineering, outlining the existing barriers and biases. The proposals they put forth included the creation of an NCAA-style organization to monitor the hiring practices of academic departments and urge them to comply with federal laws banning gender discrimination.

Rep. Brian Baird, a Democrat of Washington who is the chair of the House Subcommittee on Research and Science Education, said that Wednesday’s hearing would be the first of many on increasing the involvement of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or the STEM disciplines.

Me, a Computer Science Grad Student?

The 3rd annual CS Saturday event, held on Saturday Sept 29, was a great success.  We invited students from all over New England to spend the day talking about graduate school. Pictured are Aruna Balasubramanian, Audrey Lee, Sarah Osentoski, Siddharth Srivastava, Trevor Strohman, five of our best graduate students , who talked about their experiences. Talks from Lori Clarke, Mark Corner, David Jensen, Neil Immerman (director of the event),  Rick Adrion, and Beverly Woolf explained how to apply, how to survive, and what grad life is like. We were pleased to welcome Dr. Sukyoung Ryu, from Sun Microsystems, to our panels. Thanks go to Leeanne Leclerc for helping Neil arrange the day.

See pictures of the day here.

Report on Salaries in Academia

April 23rd, 2007 by blevine

This report from the the NEA analyzes salaries in the US Academic system. In my opinion, it’s a little coarse to look at all of academia, rather than just the sciences or STEM disciplines. For example, computer scientists make much more than many other fields since there is competition from an active industry that also does research. (School of Management professors make a killing.) But, it’s still useful to do a global study.

The report includes results on salary differences between the genders:

In 2005–06, male faculty members continued to earn more than females at nearly every institutional type (Table 8). Read the rest of this entry »

Oliver Brock attends BATEC College Fair

April 18th, 2007 by blevine

Oliver Brock, Assistant Professor in Computer Science, attended the Boston Advanced Technology Education Connections (BATEC) College Fair at Roxbury College in Boston on March 30, 2007. This fair featured representatives from about 50 colleges in the Northeast of the US. Approximately 900 high school students attend the fair to learn about opportunities for undergraduate studies. The University of Massachusetts Amherst was represented by members of the undergraduate admissions office, the Dept. of Computer Science, and the undergraduate Information Technology (IT) minor. Over 100 students expressed interest in the various undergraduate programs at UMass Amherst. These students will be contacted by the UMass Amherst admissions office and the respective department as part our overall recruitment efforts.

BATEC is partner in the new NSF Broadening Participation in Computing Grant with University of Massachusetts Amherst. BATEC’s mission is to attract a diverse student population to IT careers, promote lifelong learning of IT skills, and support the workforce needs of the region’s IT companies and departments.
