CS197C - Programming in C++ (Spring 2008)

General Course Information

Instructor: Nilanjan Banerjee
e-mail: nilanb@cs.umass.edu

Lecture Hours: 3:40 - 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays in CMPSCI 140. This course will span eight lectures starting January 30. Please make sure that you attend the first lecture on January 30.

Administration : Please register yourself at register. I will use these accounts to provide you feedback/grades on your homeworks, discussion sessions, and quizzes. So please register yourself ASAP if you are planning to take the course. Moreover, you will need to have an edlab account for the homeworks. For more information on the submission procedure for the homeworks take a look at the homework page.

Office Hours: 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. on Mondays and by appointment (drop me an email and we can fix a time to meet). Since this course will be very programming-intensive, I will very likely be in the EdLab during office hours, so look for me there.

Textbooks : There are several books for C++. If you want to learn C++ you should possess a C++ book. Below I underline a few books I recommend. I would stress that you buy one of these books and keep it as reference for the course.

  • "C++ for Java Programmers" by Mark Allen Weiss, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2004.
  • "Practical C++" by Robert W. McGregor
  • "C++ Primer" by Stanley B. Lippman
