Monitoring Energy Usage of Laptops

About

There has been a recent increase in the use of mobile devices coupled with pervasive services and applications that are unobtrusive and constantly available. Because mobile devices have limited resources, like energy, they are typically conservative about using pervasive applications. However, resources often go unused. For example, users recharge their laptop battery with a significant percentage of charge still remaining. This extra energy could be used to support pervasive applications. To validate this conjecture we gather data about the resource usage of laptops with our measurement tool. The resource measurement tool collects system measurements, including the percentage of battery remaining, the charging status of the device, the network status, the current CPU utilization, and the idle time, at regular intervals and uploads them to a server. It runs in the background with no user intervention required, and can be installed on any client that runs Mac OS X or Windows. A server registers the clients and archives data uploaded by the registered clients. We plan to use the data to design adaptive algorithms for performing pervasive applications using the excess energy that users have to spare.
